A BENEFICIAL ELECTRIFICATION INITIATIVE UTILIZING THE WIND SOLAR HYBRID PROJECT

As everyone knows, wind and solar energy is intermittent, meaning electricity is generated only when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining. If the demand for electricity is low at the same time that wind and solar energy is being produced, any “excess” energy production is lost.

Lake Region Electric Cooperative is conducting a pilot project that will test the ability of large capacity water heaters to act as thermal storage batteries. With the addition of new control technology, water heaters connected via the internet can be managed to store excess wind energy as hot water you can use at anytime.

Steffes-Marathon.jpg

  • Hot water will be produced from local wind and solar generated electricity which provides a long-term savings opportunity for pilot participants.
  • Participants are eligible for our lowest 4.8¢/kWh ETS Rate.
  • Free installation of Steffes GETS controller, ethernet connection to DSL modem, and hot water mixing valve (incredible value)!
  • All of the hot water you need and more– the Steffes GETS energy management portal anticipates and manages the hot water needs of individual households.
  • Details of how it works → How Lake Region Community Storage Works

Lake Region Electric Cooperative is looking for 40 volunteers served from the Erhard Substation with existing 80-100 gallon* Marathon or HTP water heaters and internet access. There is no cost for eligible volunteers to participate in this pilot.

Participants will be offered LREC’s lowest ETS water heating rate of 4.8¢/kWh. This is an opportunity to save money, protect the environment, and help pave the way for your friends and neighbors to participate someday soon.

Members interested in participating in this program are encouraged to contact us at (800) 552-7658 or by email at lrec@lrec.coop.

* Notice to members with 50 gallon water heaters on our 4-hour peak shave program: If you are interested in purchasing a new water heater, please contact us for available options
