CEO Message: July 2017 — Turning to Technology During Power Outages

Thursday, July 6, 2017

There was a time, not all that long ago, when the typical way Lake Region Electric Cooperative members and the cooperative interacted was by telephone, a stop at the office, through the mail, or a quick chat with an employee along the roadside. That no longer is the case. In fact, the ways our co-op members now interact with Lake Region have changed dramatically. Additionally, the types of interaction and the integration of communications between our members and the cooperative will continue to evolve. It’s a two-way street and advancements in technology are taking us there!

iphone6s.pngThis is especially apparent when we are dealing with a power outage. Members want reliable electric service and when a power outage does occur, they want a rapid response. Let me assure you that your employees and directors share these same goals. Our new Outage Management system and MyMeter programs address this issue.

We are always working diligently to improve system reliability, but we all know that power outages will still happen on occasion. Our systematic focus on vegetation management in our power line rights-of-way and physical plant improvements during recent years are paying big dividends. We’ve coupled these physical endeavors with new technologies to improve your service experience. A measurement of our success is that outage times are 61% lower today than in 2004.

You may be miles from home, but have anxiety and worry over storms affecting the electric service at your residence. When severe weather hits, you can now get the latest outage information from our website, under the Outage Management section. This is especially useful to know what’s going on while you are away from home. We keep this page updated with the latest outages in Lake Region Electric Cooperative’s service area. Additionally, we will continue to post updates throughout the power restoration process.

You can put your fears to rest because we’ll also bring the outage notification updates right to your smart phone. Just sign up to receive updates via text or email through MyMeter when your property is directly affected by a power outage. You will also be notified of the estimated time to restore power. A final message will be sent when power is restored.

You can use several different devices to access your electric usage data through MyMeter. Track your electric usage and compare it to the weather conditions or even usage from prior years. Understanding your electric consumption is the first step to making wise use of your energy dollars. MyMeter puts powerful technology in your hands!

Another recent venture that is technology driven is our Standby Generator program. We know that service reliability is your priority, but total reliability cannot be assured due to our electric distribution plant always being subject to the whims of Mother Nature, and sometimes her wrath. For those occasions when you absolutely cannot be without electricity, we have a standby generator solution that provides peace of mind. The technology provided by the Briggs & Stratton state-of-the-art system allows you to purchase a smaller generator without giving up the conveniences of whole house power. It is a smart approach to keeping your life uninterrupted. The patented Symphony II Power Management System intelligently powers your high wattage appliances. You customize your priorities, routing electricity to priority one, then two, then three, and so on. This approach ensures that you’ll always be powering what you need most.

CEO-Tim-Thompson.pngAs you can see, Lake Region has turned to technology to enhance your service experience. We are always looking for ways to strengthen our connection with you, employing technology that provides real time data and solid solutions.
