Widespread Outage Involving Transmission Line

Friday, January 5, 2018

On the night of January 4th, 2018, over 2,500 members, many who are served by the Lake Eunice Substation, were without power for several hours. The outage was caused by a broken jumper wire on a Great River Energy (GRE) transmission line near Audubon, MN, which feeds power to the substation. The failure was most likely caused by the cold temperatures—bitter cold can sometimes snap a wire in a connector.

As a GRE crew traveled to the area to fix the issue, LREC crews worked to back feed electricity through the LREC distribution system to provide temporary power until GRE worked to make the repairs and restore power on the transmission line. Power was restored for most members before midnight with the remainder being restored a little after 1 a.m.

Members who are interested in knowing when there are outages affecting their properties should make sure to sign up for our outage notification service. The service allows members to receive a text or an email informing them of the status of any outage affecting their property. They will also be notified of the estimated time to restore power. A final message will be sent when power is restored. The steps to sign up are below.

How to Sign Up for Outage Notifications

  1. Visit MyMeter by clicking "View Energy Usage — MyMeter" to the right.
  2. You must be a registered MyMeter user; if you need to register, click on Create an Account. In order to register for MyMeter you need your account number, your name as it appears on your account, an email address, a password, and a secret question to answer.
  3. Once you are logged in, click on the profile icon in the top-right corner and choose Communication Options from the drop down box.
  4. Now add an email address and/or cell number (for text messages) for each service location you have. For each location at which you’d like to receive outage notifications, move the switch in the Outages column to “On”.
