There’s a Reason it’s Called "Winter Survival"

  5. There’s a Reason it’s Called "Winter Survival"

By Lidia Dilley Jacobson

I often say, it’s our own fault for choosing to live in such a cold climate. Just think about how we never hear anyone talking about “summer survival”, unless, of course, you have children at home! As winter drags on we find ourselves facing extreme cold temperatures, slippery roads, and counting the days until we can mow our lawns again.

But, it isn’t a laughing matter if you ever find yourself on the side of the road or stuck in a snowbank where you are going to have to spend some time in your vehicle. It won’t take long for it to cool down to dangerously low temperatures.

Winter Safety Kit

Take action now, make a survival kit, and place it in your vehicle so you will be prepared for whatever winter brings this year. Most likely you already have the supplies you need around your house. Just gather them up, place them in a plastic tote, and find peace of mind knowing that you and your family will be better protected this winter.

What to Put in Your Survival Kit

  • battery powered radio
  • blankets or sleeping bag
  • booster cables
  • broom (small)
  • candles and matches
  • candy bars
  • cat litter for traction
  • cell phone adapter to plug into lighter
  • chain or rope for towing
  • emergency flares and reflectors
  • extra hats, socks, and mittens
  • first aid kit with pocket knife
  • flashlight with extra batteries
  • fluorescent distress flag
  • shovel
  • snack food including energy bars
  • water
  • whistle to attract attention
  • windshield scraper

Ok, there might be one item you will have to buy – a harmonica. It will help you pass the time, annoy your passengers, or make a great story to tell when you get rescued.

Safe travels this winter!
