Local Governance Works for You // CEO Column September 2019

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

As member-owners of Lake Region Electric Cooperative, you are not just part of a very positive story. You are the reason for the story!

A solid foundation with the flexibility to keep moving forward.

The nation’s electric cooperatives have continually evolved with the times, yet have always focused on the cooperative’s membership. Today’s electric cooperatives are leaders in developing renewable energies, managing the electric power grid, incentivizing energy efficiency in homes and industries, and encouraging local economic development initiatives. We do these things because throughout the decades we’ve continued to remain close to our membership and are aware of the needs and concerns of the local communities we serve.

Our cooperative’s objective is simple, just as it always has been — to provide safe and reliable electric service through our not-for-profit business model. Those who use our services are member-owners of the cooperative and receive capital credit refunds.

Keeping a finger on the pulse of our local members.

Lake Region Electric Cooperative is a time-tested model of democratic member control. This form of business empowers our member-owners. There is transparency in the cooperative’s governance because the directors are nominated from and by their fellow member-owners. Having directors elected by the membership ensures a level of accountability and accessibility that stays at the local level. Your directors are your neighbors, the people you interact with at places like the grocery store, church, and civic organizations. This serves Lake Region very well. It provides more opportunities for cooperative leadership to listen to and respond to our members’ needs and concerns.

An issue of control.

As I’ve noted in this article, it is the Lake Region Electric Cooperative membership that drives our business. What you may not know is that we also work closely with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and our state legislature. We do this because we choose to be a responsible player in the delivery of electricity and ancillary services to our members. Any exemptions that our electric cooperative receives from the PUC or legislature is because of our transparency and the local member control that is the core of our business.

Sharing information.

We do this not only through our newsletter, NewsFlashes, but also through various meetings, social media, and more. After all, our members own and control this business. We encourage you to ask any questions you have by contacting our office. We are here  for you!
